Qualifications
Manuja is one of Australia’s most well trained and highly qualified non-interventional cardiologists, being one of a few experts in all cardiac imaging modalities. He undertook his medical training at the University of Queensland. He completed his cardiology training at Wollongong and Prince of Wales Hospitals in NSW and an Echocardiography Fellowship at the Prince of Wales Hospital, one of Australia’s busiest units.
This was followed by a 2 year Advanced Cardiac Imaging Fellowship at Canada’s largest cardiac program, the world renowned University of Ottawa Heart Institute, where he trained in Cardiac CT, MRI and nuclear cardiology (SPECT and PET). He is one of only 10 Australian cardiologists to be granted the United States’ board certification in Cardiac CT.
He has received Awards from the American College of Cardiology and the American Society of Nuclear Cardiology including recognition in 2014 as one of the 10 top researchers in the USA and Canada in Cardiac Imaging. His research focussed on the appropriate use of cardiac imaging and he was invited to address the US Congress on this topic. He has co-authored book chapters and multiple papers in cardiac imaging. He is frequently invited as an expert peer reviewer for cardiac imaging scientific journals and an invited speaker and chair at international conferences.
Since his return to Australia he has been practicing as a General Cardiologist and Cardiac Imaging Specialist. As the Head of Cardiac Imaging at Peninsula Health he has transformed the service into an internationally recognised centre of excellence. In 2018 the Siemens company joined Dr Premaratne as a luminary site partner in the next generation of Cardiac CT research which promises patients on the Mornington Peninsula and Victoria access to world first advances in Cardiac CT. He continues to be involved in national and international research regarding novel and appropriate applications of cardiac
imaging. He is a member of the scientific meeting planning committee for the world body responsible for Cardiac CT, The Society of Cardiac CT, and is their international liaison.
As a Fellow of the RACP he is involved in teaching cardiology registrars, basic physician trainees, Monash University medical students, and is an examiner for both the RACP and Monash University medical school.
Manuja has a considered approach to patient care and his decision making is informed by best practice. His role as the Head of Cardiac Imaging at Peninsula Health and expert knowledge of all cardiac imaging modalities uniquely places Manuja to ensure you are provided with the most appropriate and clinically indicated test.
Manuja has had an international upbringing. Born in Sri Lanka he spent most of his childhood in England, before moving to New Zealand and Brisbane where he completed his secondary schooling. When he is not at work he can be found with his wife and children, he is an enthusiastic Demons’ supporter (next year will be their year!) and a cricket tragic.
